How to vectorize picture?

How to vectorize a picture in Adobe Illustrator, in Photoshop or with online software? A comprehensive explanation including the pros and cons for each method.

Vectorizing a picture in Illustrator

Open the logo in Adobe Illustrator. Then draw the logo manually. This means tracing each shape in the logo and filling it with a color.

Pros

  • The result is excellent (we also use Illustrator).
  • You can customize the logo.
  • You can save the logo in the three most commonly used vector file formats AI, EPS, and PDF.

Cons

  • It takes (a lot of) time to recreate a logo.
  • You must first learn to work with Illustrator before you can trace a logo.
  • Adobe Illustrator costs money.

Have your picture vectorized for a fixed price

Don’t have time to vectorize yourself? Then have this done by a specialist, such as ViaVector. For vectorizing logos, we use fixed prices.

Vectorizing a picture in Photoshop

Vectorizing a file properly in Photoshop is not possible. For this you really need Adobe Illustrator. This is because Photoshop is a pixel based program. Illustrator is a vector based program.

Picture vectorization online

Online you can find websites that can vectorize your picture.

Original logo vs. logo vectorization online (Vector Magic)

Cons

  • Not always a good result. As you can see with the logo above, the logo is not neatly vectorized.
  • You need to create an account.
  • You have to take out a monthly subscription.

Pros

  • Quick.
