Increase resolution of logo: how to do it?

The resolution of your logo is too low to get a nice enlargement. Of course, you never want to hear that. So you start looking for ways to get that resolution better. But how do you do that? In this blog, you’ll read everything you need to know to increase the resolution of your logo.

What exactly is resolution?

Let’s start with the basics. Because, what exactly is the resolution of your logo? By resolution, we mean the number of pixels or dots a logo has on a screen or in a print. In short, the more pixels, the more “information” there is in an image. And the more information, the sharper your logo will appear. A low resolution therefore means that your logo is composed of only a ‘few’ pixels.

With displays, we talk about PPI: pixels per inch. The more pixels per inch, the sharper your image. The resolution of printed materials is described by the term DPI, or Dots Per Inch. The number of dots per inch indicates the resolution. And again, the more dots in an inch, the sharper the print.

Increase resolution of your logo: why?

A low resolution may not be so bad if you want to use it in an avatar on your screen or print a mini logo. But sometimes it is necessary to have a higher resolution of your file. Print or enlarge a low resolution logo? Then you won’t get a nice end result. You’ll quickly get to see a “pixelated” version. And that’s not what you want. Do you want to print your logo larger? Then it’s important to make sure your file has a high resolution.

For printing, a resolution of 300 DPI is often used. Then logos can be printed sharply and details remain intact. Is the resolution of your logo lower? Then you get a less good result. And do you want to print it really big? Then maybe even 300 DPI is not enough. So what do you do? You can, of course, try increasing the resolution of your logo.

Increasing the resolution of your logo: is it possible?

There are a lot of options for trying to increase the resolution of your logo. You can increase the resolution with an app. Some apps are specifically designed for this. They actually stretch your image and “fill in” pieces with the information already in the image. Because that information is often quite limited, you don’t always get the best results.

Do you want to increase your resolution in Photoshop or do you want to increase the resolution with Paint? (We’ve even heard of people increasing the resolution in Word or with an online tool.) In all these cases you quickly run into problems, but you can improve it a bit. However, there are limits and the results are not always optimal: the information is simply not in the file.
